New Year's Evil (1980): A Macabre Review.

New Year's Evil Poster
Starring Roz Kelly, Kip Niven, Grant Cramer
Directed by Emmett Alston

Another year has come and gone, and what better way to end 2013 with a movie fitting the occasion.  This time I go way back to 1980 with New Year's EvilNYE marked the directorial debut of Emmett Alston, who later went on to direct such gems as Demonwarp, and a number of ninja-themed movies.  His last directing effort was in 1990, and he really hasn't done a whole lot since.  So let's get into my pick for the last review of 2013, and see what I've gotten myself into.

Santa's Slay (2005): A Macabre Review.

Santa's Slay Poster
Starring Bill Goldberg, Robert Culp, Emilie De Ravin
Directed by David Steiman

And we're back.  it's time for another holiday fear-fest with the 2005 movie Santa's Slay.  Well, maybe fear-fest isn't the right way to put it.  After all, the movie isn't scary whatsoever, it's really more of a comedy-horror.  But is it good enough to be a part of one's holiday viewing?  Let's find out.

Infinite Santa 8000 (2013): A Macabre Review.

Infinite Santa 8000 Poster

Greetings my scary sycophants.  Today I'm taking a look at a movie I debated reviewing, mainly because it's not exactly scary, and not something I define as horror.  That movie being Infinite Santa 8000.  While there are some horror elements in it, it's really more of a post-apocalyptic action-fest.  However, given that it has at least something to do with Christmas, I decided to go ahead and review it anyway.  Let's begin.

13/13/13 (2013): A Macabre Review.

13/13/13 Poster
Starring Trae Ireland, Erin Coker, Jody Barton
Directed by James Cullen Bressack

13/13/13, directed by James Cullen Bressack, is a movie that has been on my "to watch" list for some time, ever since seeing that it was on Netflix.  But like so many movies I intend to watch, something always managed to prevent me from getting around to it.  But then I noticed a sudden wave of talk about it on Twitter.  So I decided to move it up in my movie priority list, just to see what all the talk is about.

Graveside Ramblings: Feedback Wanted

Hey everyone.  Well, I've been doing this blog for almost a year now, and I've been having a good time doing it.  However, as of late I've been curious to know how I've been doing in the eyes of you readers out there.  I'm always looking to improve myself, and Necropolis Macabre is no exception, as it's an extension of myself in a way.

So what I'm getting at is, I want to get some feedback from as many of you as possible.  I would like to know the following:

  • What I'm doing right

  • What I'm doing wrong

  • Is there anything you want to see in the blog that I haven't talked about yet?

  • Do you have any issues with my format, how often I post reviews, etc?

Those are just a few examples I thought of.  But anything you want to comment about, good or bad, I would appreciate you leaving some comments below.  I'm interested in hearing what you might have to say.  If I don't see anything comment-wise, I'll assume everything is good and I'll keep doing what I'm doing.  That's pretty much it.  Bye for now.

Deadly Presence (2013): A Macabre Review.

Deadly Presence Poster
Starring Megan Lynn, Kathy Sue Holtorf, Sabrina Carmichael
Directed by Shane Cole

Greetings to all once again.  Today I dive back in to the world of horror with the independent movie Deadly Presence, brought to you by Masked Films and Brain Damage Films.  Directed by Shane Cole and starring Megan Lynn and Kathy Sue Holtorf, Deadly Presence was shot on a micro-budget.  This of course appeals to my curiosity as I like to see what people are capable of without a Hollywood budget.  So let's get into it and see what comes of it.

Necropolis News: ABCs OF DEATH 2 - Top 12 Finalists Announced!

Top Twelve Finalists Announced and Heading to Theaters in ABCs OF DEATH 2’s “Search for the 26th Director

Popular fan competition from Magnet Releasing, Timpson Films and Drafthouse Films secures triple the original film’s number of entries, from over 40 countries

New York City – 17 November 2013 – Producers Ant Timpson, Tim League, and Magnet Releasing have announced the twelve finalists in ABCs OF DEATH 2’s “Search for the 26th Director.”

The original ABCs OF DEATH, comprised of 26 alphabet-themed ways to die from the biggest names in horror, invited any and all indie filmmakers from around the world to submit their own T-themed deaths – with one exceptional entry being chosen to appear in the final film. The tradition of selecting the 26th Director proudly continues in the 2014 sequel.

The competition’s twelve outstanding finalists will be voted on by the upcoming anthology film’s other 25 directors, with a victor being announced on December 15th.

The Top Twelve finalists will be screened for free at select Alamo Drafthous locations on December 15th, after which Drafthouse founder/CEO Tim League will announce the competition’s winner. In addition to receiving a $5000 cash prize, the winning film will be become ABCs OF DEATH 2’s “M” segment.

The competition’s twelve finalists, half of which were chosen via public vote and half by jury selection, are Dante Vescio and Rodrigo Gasparini’s “M is for Mailbox”, Summer Johnson’s “M is for Make Believe”, Steve Daniels’ “M is for Marauder”, Robert Boocheck’s “M is for Masticate”, Sean Tretta’s “M is for Matchmaker”, Wolfgang Matzl’s “M is for Meat”, BC Glassberg’s “M is for Mind Meld”, Álvaro Núñez’s “M is for Miracle”, Antonio Padovan’s “M is for Misdirection”, Mia'Kate Russell’s “M is for Muff”, Santi González’s “M is for Multiverse Apathy”, and Jason Koch and Clint Kelly’s “M is for Munging.”

With a whopping 541 final entries from over 40 countries submitted to the competition, the sequel’s terrifying tournament ranks as one of the industry’s most popular fan film contests. “Our dedicated jury watched 27 hours worth of entries,” said producer and juror Ant Timpson. “The sequel’s ‘Search for the 26th Director’ had three times the number of entries submitted to the first film’s contest. Narrowing our selections down to six proved immensely difficult, given the massive number of absolutely incredible films submitted.”

Along with Timpson, the jury of horror experts also included producer Tim League, Associate Producer Ted Geoghegan, Magnolia Pictures’ Matt Cowal, Entertainment Weekly Senior Writer Clark Collis, Horror-Movie-A-Day founder and Badass Digest contributor Brian Collins, author Grady Hendrix, and Fangoria Magazine Managing Editor Michael Gingold.

Aside from creating the very best entries possible, the six finalists chosen by public vote used their own innovative takes on film publicity, marketing, contests, and viral outreach to secure their entries as many votes as possible.

The twelve finalists will be voted upon by the ABCs OF DEATH 2’s other attached directors: an eclectic, acclaimed group consisting of Julian Barratt of The Mighty Boosh; Goya Award winner Álex de la Iglesia (THE LAST CIRCUS, WITCHING AND BITCHING); Israel’s Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado (BIG BAD WOLVES, RABIES); Japan’s arthouse provocateur Sion Sono (COLD FISH, SUICIDE CLUB); Academy Award-nominated animator Bill Plympton; ROOM 237 mastermind Rodney Ascher; Filipino icon – and Director’s Fortnight inductee – Erik Matti (ON THE JOB, MAGIC TEMPLE); Lithuania’s Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper (VANISHING WAVES); SPLICE and CUBE’s Vincenzo Natali; indie horror icon Larry Fessenden (THE LAST WINTER, HABIT); THE STATION’s Marvin Kren; Todd Rohal (THE CATECHISM CATALYSM); Canada’s king of lo-fi, Steven Kostanski (MANBORG); Cuba’s Alejandro Brugués (JUAN OF THE DEAD); acclaimed UK commercial director Jim Hosking; Japanese monster-maker Hajime Ohata (HENGE); Canadian short film wizard Chris Nash (SKINFECTIONS); France’s Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (INSIDE, LIVID); E.L. Katz (director of the SXSW breakout hit CHEAP THRILLS); twin auteurs Jen and Sylvia Soska (AMERICAN MARY, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK); A LONELY PLACE TO DIE’s Julian Gilbey; Brazil’s most controversial filmmaker Dennison Ramalho (NINJAS and LOVE FOR MOTHER ONLY); the founder of Nigerian “Nollywood” cinema Lancelot Imasuen; THE LEGEND OF BEAVER DAM and the upcoming STAGEFRIGHT’s Jerome Sable; and animator Robert Morgan – creator of the BAFTA Award nominated short BOBBY YEAH.

“Being a part of the original ABCs OF DEATH was the proudest and most important moment of my life,” says ‘T is for Toilet’ director Lee Hardcastle, whose innovative stop-motion entry won the first film’s ‘Search for the 26th Director.’ “Winning the competition was a dream come true and got my video in front of all the right people. I’ve since become great friends with many of the ABCs crew, and even collaborated with some of them on my own personal projects.”

Magnet is planning a 2014 release of the film. ABCs OF DEATH 2 is produced by Ant Timpson and Tim League, in conjunction with associate producers Todd Brown, Marc Walkow, Mitch Davis, and Ted Geoghegan.

Directed by Ruairi Robinson

And we're back!  I must say, I had fun talking about the Halloween series (even though a couple of the sequels made me a little angry), but it's good to be getting back to some variety in my reviews.  Which brings us to today's review of The Last Days On Mars.  It was directed by Ruairi Robinson, an Irish director. And from what I can tell, this is his debut full-length directing gig.  So how does he do?  Well, let's find out.

Halloween: Resurrection: The Halloween Retrospective.

Halloween: Resurrection
Starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Busta Rhymes, Katee Sackhoff
Directed by Rick Rosenthal

So here we are, the final Halloween review for the year.  In case I haven't mentioned it, I'll not be including Rob Zombie's Halloween movies with this retrospective, though I may share my thoughts sometime down the road.  Halloween: Resurrection was released in 2002 and directed by Rick Rosenthal, who also directed Halloween 2.  So that's pretty promising right there.  Jamie Lee Curtis even returns to reprise her role as Laurie Strode.  So this has all the makings of another classic, right?  Well...

The year is 1998.  It's been 20 years since Michael Myers escaped Smith's Grove Asylum and terrorized Haddonfield.  Today I talk about Halloween H20, directed by Steve Miner and stars Jamie Lee Curtis and a young Josh Hartnett and Michelle Williams.  Let's not waste any time and get right into it.

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers: The Halloween Retrospective

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers
Starring Donald Pleasance, Paul Rudd, Marianne Hagan
Directed by Joe Chappelle

Well, here we go again.  After giving myself a little break after suffering through the atrocity that was Halloween 5, I'm back at it to continue the path I set for myself.  Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers was released in 1995, and takes place six years after the events of Part 5.  Directing this time was done by Joe Chappelle, who later went on to direct in a number of TV shows, including Fringe and CSI NY and Miami.  Does Chappelle have what it takes to put the series back on track?

Carrie (2013): A Macabre Review.

Carrie 2013 Poster
Starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Gabriella Wilde,
Directed by Kimberly Peirce

Greetings.  I finally got around to seeing Carrie this week.  To be honest, I wasn't exactly chomping at the bit to see it.  It didn't seem like it was going to suck per se, but it looked to be no different from the original from the 80s.  But the horror part of my brain (which actually makes up about 80% total brain usage) got the better of me, and I gave in.  Can director Kimberly Peirce one-up Brian De Palma's version?  Let's find out.

Halloween 5: The Halloween Retrospective.

Halloween 5

Hello again.  Last time we got Michael Myers offing quite a large number of people, yet somehow was unable to kill a ten-year old kid.  Since Halloween 4  did make a profit, logically another one had to be made.  With the number of flaws Part 4 had, and director Dominique Othenin-Girard running things, the series can only go up from here, can't it?  Well let's get right into Halloween 5, and see what direction it did take.

Halloween 4: The Halloween Retrospective

Halloween 4
Starring Donald Pleasance, Danielle Harris, Ellie Cornell
Directed by Dwight H. Little

Well, the people cried out for it, and they were heard.  Halloween 4 meant the triumphant return of Michael Myers.  And his return was well-timed too, as Halloween 4 was released ten years after the first Halloween.  It has been a while since I've seen the movie I'll be discussing today, so we'll see how it holds up in my eyes after all this time.

Halloween 3: The Halloween Retrospective

Halloween 3
Starring Tom Atkins, Stacy Nelkin, Dan O'Herlihy
Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace

So, Michael Myers has apparently died.  Where do we go from here?  Well, Halloween 3 answers that question for you.  The Halloween series was originally planned as an anthology series, in which the movie I'm about to review is just part of the plan.  However, it's gotten a lot of hate over the years due to not sticking to the first two movies.  But is it really such a bad movie?  Well, I'll just go right ahead and let you know what I think of it.

Halloween 2: The Halloween Retrospective

Halloween 2
Starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasance, Lance Guest
Directed by Rick Rosenthal

Well, here we are again.  Back when I was growing up on horror, the concept of watching horror series in order didn't seem to be such an important detail.  I was just a kid who wanted to watch horror movies, period.  Halloween 2 wasn't a movie I watched right away.  In fact, I'm pretty sure I watched part 4, part 5, and part 3 in that order before I even got around to watching part 2.  And it's only been in the last year that I've actually gotten around to watching Halloween 2 again.  Being that I barely remembered what happened in it, it was almost like watching it again for the first time.  And today I'm going to review it with a (slightly) more mature mind and let you know what I think about it.

Out of ideas and at the end of his rope, Duncan seeks the help of a hypnotherapist (Peter Stormare), who helps him discover the root of his unusual stomach pain: a pintsized demon living in his intestine that, triggered by excessive anxiety, forces its way out and slaughters the people who have angered him. Greetings fellow creepazoids.  This time around I'm going to take a look at the super low-budget horror anthology Horror House, directed by Evan Marlowe, and starring none other than Troma head honcho Lloyd Kaufman himself.  I've always had a soft spot for anthologies.  Every anthology I've ever seen had at least one story I enjoyed watching.  So allow me to talk a little about Horror House and we'll see whether or not this was an exception to the rule.

Necropolis News: Infinite Santa 8000 Official Artwork and VOD Release Date!

Infinite Santa 8000

Infinite Santa 8000 will be available on Video On Demand December 1st, 2013.  Official carriers to be announced.

About The Film

Infinite Santa 8000 is the feature length story based on the popular web series of the same name. The original Web Series is 13 episodes long on YouTube which features the same lead characters (Santa, Dr Shackleton, and Martha) but tells a separate story from the film. With a view count of over 720,000 views, the series has garnered a cult following of fans demanding more content. Filmmakers Michael Neel and Greg Ansin, the team behind Midnight Releasing’s Drive-In Horrorshow and the Web Series, decided to give the fans what they want. They took the characters and the universe and have created a full length film with a simple concept: A cyborg Santa Claus killing mutants and robo-people in a vast post apocalyptic wasteland in the year 8000.  With a heavy metal soundtrack, the film features epic battle scenes, violent killing, and a 100-Foot Evil Easter Bunny.

Synopsis

A thousand years ago the world completely collapsed. Not much remains, except for the mutants, scum, and robo-people. Everyone must kill to survive.

Even Santa.

It is the year 8000. War, famine, and disease have ravaged the earth, transforming it into an inhospitable, desolate wasteland. Infinite Santa – half human and half machine – survives any way he can in this bleak world. Despite his tough existence, Infinite Santa still dreams of keeping the Christmas spirit alive by spreading goodwill and cheer to the nice people of the world.  But as the years have passed it has become harder for Infinite Santa. Instead of good people, all he finds are evildoers and hideous, no-good robo-mutations.

His one ray of hope is Martha, a robot girl full of the Christmas spirit. He rescued her from a deadly situation, and now she is like a daughter to him. They have a hard life but a good one, living on Santa’s ranch with his robo-reindeer. But Santa’s luck is about to run out. Santa’s arch-enemy, the evil mad scientist Dr. Shackleton, has found Santa again. Shackleton hates Santa and his stupid holiday, and will stop at nothing to uncover Infinite Santa’s mysterious secrets…and then destroy Infinite Santa once and for all. Dr. Shackleton is no fool. He knows how powerful Infinite Santa is, and has built an army to destroy him and Martha. Batsharks, Crabmonkeys, Dragonfly Snakes, Octo-Blobs, and Skin-Bots - and if they can’t kill Infinite Santa, a 100-foot Evil Easter Bunny should do the trick.

This fight will test Infinite Santa to his limits. He’ll need machine guns, flamethrowers, machetes, knives, jet packs, ornament grenades, and everything else in his arsenal just to survive.

Insidious Chapter 2 (2013): A Macabre Review.

Insidious Chapter 2
Starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye
Directed by James Wan

Well, I saw Insidious: Chapter 2 last night.  I was going into it with a fair amount of optimism, as I did enjoy the first Insidious despite it's relatively high number of jump scares.  The characters were well done, most of the jump scares were pretty effective, and while the last third of the movie got kind of strange with the whole astral projection trip into "The Further," all in all it was a good time.  So now I'll talk about the sequel and if it's worth a trip to the cinema.

Necropolis News: Maxim Media International Acquires “Slaughter Daughter”

SD_PromoPoster_NotFinalArtwork

Terrible daughter. Perfect killer.

Maxim Media International, a worldwide distributor of independent horror films has acquired Slaughter Daughter for worldwide distribution. Plans are underway to release the film on DVD and Video On Demand with the North America imprint Brain Damage Films. Official artwork and release dates are coming soon!

About the Film:

Slaughter Daughter is the brainchild of Director Travis Campbell and Writer/Producer Lauren Miller. Campbell and Miller also partnered up on their previous feature, Mr. Bricks: A Heavy Metal Murder Musical. After Mr. Bricks was completed, they begin brainstorming a new idea about a matricidal young woman named Farrah. They immediately thought of Nicola Fiore, one of the stars of Mr. Bricks, to play the lead. Italian Giallo films of the 1970s, soap operas, and true crime novels all became the inspirations behind Slaughter Daughter.

In January of 2011, the team began to build an online presence for the film and shot the first of what would become a weekly web series lasting 8 episodes. The series focused in on Farrah’s stint in a mental hospital and aired on YouTube. From there, the team pulled up their socks and climbed the uphill battle of making independent film. Fueled by inspiration and determination, they completed the project and gave birth to something truly inspired.

Slaughter Daughter is an inspirational film to me.” says director Travis Campbell. “I know this sounds strange since it is a horror movie, yet making the film was an opportunity for me to get out of my comfort zone. I was excited to get inside the female psyche. Independent film is a hard business, and some say it is dead. There is no money and at the end of the night, you know you have to go back to the daily grind the next morning. My hope is my movie will stand out and rescue you from this monotony. With Slaughter Daughter I believe this is entirely possible.

The webisode playlist is available here.

Full Synopsis:

After being left at the altar 5 years ago, ex-beauty queen Farrah Adjani has receded into her own world. She lives at home in an apartment shared by her mother and aunt, and rarely comes out of her room. She spends her time flipping through the 24-hour news cycle and feeding her obsession with Jackson Miles, a recently convicted serial killer. Everything changes when her overbearing drunk of a mother returns home from her date, flashes a ring, and announces 'Mommy's getting married!' Thrown into a tailspin, Farrah makes a drastic move to get noticed by Jackson Miles. She wants to learn everything Jackson knows about murder.  Farrah never could be the perfect daughter, but can she be the perfect killer? On her mother's wedding day, she's planning to find out!
